Harry Kane, England’s captain, missed a key penalty in the FIFA World Cup 2022 quarterfinals vs France at the Al Bayt Stadium on Saturday. Didier Deschamps and co. won the game 2-1 and will play Morocco in the semifinal.

English substitute Mason Mount was fouled in his first minutes on the pitch. Chasing a ball, he was brought down by Hernandez. France led the game 2-1 and VAR awarded England a penalty. Kane had a golden chance to equalise and send the game to extra-time. However, his strike went way above the bar.

“For some of them to be abused is unforgivable. Some of it has come from abroad, we have been told this, but some of it is from this country. We have been a beacon of light to bring people together and the national team stands for everybody. We felt the energy and positivity from the fans and I’m incredibly proud of that,” Southgate said.
