Stock market midday report: Sensex declines 170 points, Nifty around 18,000

Despite favorable signs from other Asian markets, weak activity remained on Dalal Street in the late morning session, with both the Sensex and the Nifty trading in red territory. The Hang Seng rose 316.06 points or 1.24% to 25,706.97, the Taiwan Weighted rose 33.68 points or 0.19% to 17,668.15, the Jakarta Composite rose 27.99 points or 0.42% to 6,644.02, the Nikkei 225 rose 15.85 points or 0.05% to 29,792.65 and the Shanghai Composite rose 11.16 points or 0.32% to 3,544.46. On the other hand, the Straits Times dipped 2.11 points, or 0.07%, to 3,238.47, while the KOSPI sank 5.72 points, or 0.19%, to 2,993.80.
The BSE Sensex is presently trading at 60542.68, down 176.03 points or 0.29% from its low of 60405.74 and high of 60802.79. On the index, there were 12 stocks that advanced and 18 stocks that declined.
The wider indexes were trading in the green, with the BSE Midcap index up 0.33% and the Small-cap index up 0.61%.
The top gaining sectoral indices on the BSE were Auto up by 1.49%, IT up by 0.73%, Consumer discretionary up by 0.64%, Power up by 0.62%, and TECK up by 0.56%, while the top losing indices on the BSE were Energy down by 1.17%, Bankex down by 0.62%, Oil & Gas down by 0.45%, PSU down by 0.27%, and FMCG down by 0.06%.
The biggest gainers on the Sensex were Maruti Suzuki, which rose 3.45%, Bajaj Finserv, which rose 1.25%, Power Grid, which rose 1.17%, Bajaj Finance, which rose 1.14%, and Infosys, which rose 0.87%. The biggest losers were Reliance Industries, which fell 1.61%, Asian Paints, which fell 1.40%, SBI, which fell 1.25%, HDFC, which fell 1.02%, and Kotak Mahindra Bank, which fell 0.95%.
The CNX Nifty is presently trading at 18062.30, down 47.15 points or 0.26% after ranging between 18023.95 and 18132.65. On the index, there were 23 stocks that advanced and 27 stocks that declined.
Maruti Suzuki gained 3.64%, Tata Motors gained 2.74%, Hero MotoCorp gained 1.62%, Bajaj Finance gained 1.19%, and Power Grid gained 1.17% on the Nifty. The biggest losers were Reliance Industries, which fell 1.53%, Shree Cement, which fell 1.50%, Asian Paints, which fell 1.47%, BPCL, which fell 1.21%, and SBI, which fell 1.19%.
