Tesla founder Elon Musk said on Sunday that a brain-implant developed by his neurotechnology company Neuralink has enabled a monkey to play video games with its mind.

“He’s a happy monkey,” Musk said, adding that videos of the monkey will be released in around a month, Bloomberg reported.

Musk, founder of electric car maker Tesla and the world’s richest person, was speaking in an interview of the audio-streaming app Clubhouse.

Musk was responding to questions about the latest developments at the San Francisco-based Neuralink, a startup launched in 2017 which aims to develop a brain-computer interface.

“We have a monkey with a wireless implant in their skull with tiny wires who can play video games with his mind,” Musk told the listeners.

“You can’t see where the implant is and he’s a happy monkey. We have the nicest monkey facilities in the world. We want them to play mind-Pong with each other.”

Musk has also founded the aerospace manufacturer and transport firm SpaceX and is known for his interest in futuristic projects from artificial intelligence to Hyperloop.

He said that Neuralink aims to use brain-linking technology to address brain and spinal injuries and make up for lost capacities like motor functions with a chip implanted in the brain.

“There are primitive versions of this device with wires sticking out of your head, but it’s like a Fitbit in your skull with tiny wires that go into your brain,” Musk said.

In a recent tweet, Musk said the company’s short-term goal was to “solve” brain and spine injuries, while the long-term goals are “human/AI symbiosis”, adding that the “Latter will be species-level important”.
