Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party, on February 23, Tuesday, made inroads in BJP’s stronghold in Surat in the Gujarat civic poll elections. According to the latest updates, confirmed by the state election commission, BJP won 12 seats out of 120 seats in Surat and AAP bagged eight seats. However, Congress failed to make a mark. Going into celebratory-mode, the AAP tweeted its results, saying “AAP breaches BJP’s citadel”.

At 5 pm, results were declared for 451 seats out of 576 seats. The BJP won 367 seats, Congress 58, AAP 27, BSP 3 and others 4.

The AAP was the second-largest party in Surat winning 27 seats. The BJP bagged 93 seats and the Congress failed to make a dent. These municipal polls are being seen as a precursor to the Assembly elections due in the state next year.

In Surat, AAP bagged 27 seats as compared to Congress’ zero. The counting of votes was held today for 192 seats across 48 wards in the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation, for 120 seats across 30 wards in the Surat Municipal Corporation, 52 seats across 13 wards in the Bhavnagar Municipal Corporation and 64 seats across 16 wards in the Jamnagar Municipal Corporation.

After AAP’s performance in the civic polls, Kejriwal said that he will visit Gujarat on February 26 and conduct a roadshow on February 26.

The Delhi government, for some time now, has been climbing steadily, increasing its presence nationally. In Goa and Kashmir civic polls, AAP won. AAP’s Hanzel Fernandes was victorious in a panchayat election seat in Goa, whereas AAP leader Mehraj Malik won the DDC polls from the Kahara constituency in Jammu and Kashmir’s Doda.

This also marks the first time that the ruling party of Delhi fought in all seats in the civic body election in Gujarat. Earlier, the party announced its plan to contest in the assembly elections of several states – Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Goa, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, and Gujarat.
