On Thursday, TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew appeared before a House panel to argue against a ban on his app, after Congress sais its Chinese ownership poses a national security threat. He reassured Americans their data is safe and there was no way that Beijing will be able to influence what viewers see on TikTok.

“Let me start by addressing some misconceptions about ByteDance, of which [TikTok] are a subsidiary. ByteDance is not owned or controlled by the Chinese,” he said. He added: “We expect that to be complete this year. When that is done, all protected U.S. data will be under the protection of U.S. law.”
