Lucknow, May 18 (PTI) A Lucknow University professor was allegedly assaulted by a student on the campus on Wednesday, days after he triggered a controversy with his remarks on the Kashi Vishwanath temple.The incident occurred around 1 pm outside the proctor's office.Karthik Pandey, a student leader, came to me and started hurling abuses and casteist slurs at me and hit me, Professor Ravi Kant Chandan of the university's Hindi department said.Two guards accompanying the professor overpowered the student and handed him over to the police.I have filed a complaint with the police regarding the incident. This incident shows that my life is under constant threat, the professor said.The student, Kartik Pandey, is an officer bearer of the Samajwadi Chhatra Sabha, a student outfit of the Samajwadi Party. He was ousted from the outfit hours after the incident.Lucknow University spokesperson Durgesh Srivastav said Karthik Pandey was suspended for attacking the professor. A committee has been formed to investigate the matter, he added.The attack comes a week after an FIR was registered against the professor for allegedly hurting Hindu religious sentiments among other charges based on the complaint by the ABVP (Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad). He was accused of making objectionable comments over the Kashi Vishwanath temple-Gyanvapi complex in Varanasi during a debate on an online portal.

An officer of the Bidhannaagar Police Commissionerate said around 100 ABVP members turned violent when they were stopped near Bikash Bhavan - the headquarters of the department - prompting security personnel to baton-charge and deploy water cannons.ABVP national secretary Saptarshi Sarkar said four of our activists were arrested while at least six others suffered injuries in the police action”.Sarkar said the ABVP members wanted to submit a memorandum to the higher education authorities against the alleged irregularities in appointments.“The lathi-charge by police was unprovoked,” he claimed.

However, the students have claimed that the offline classes in the School of International Studies haven't started yet.The protest was organised in front of SIS Dean's office.In a statement, the ABVP said it stands with SIS students in the fight for offline classes, seminars and workshops.It also condemned the undemocratic and authoritarian approach of the Dean with regards to offline classes.On 7th February 2022, JNU VC released a circular to commence offline classes in all schools. Even after that, SIS Dean has relentlessly refused to start offline classes in SIS, which shows his inactivity regarding student issues.Additionally SIS used to organise school level seminars before the commencement of new semester, which has now totally stopped under new Dean, said ABVP JNU president Rohit Kumar.

Lucknow, May 11 (PTI) A video clip of a remark by a Lucknow University professor has triggered a controversy with the ABVP staging a protest and filing an FIR against him for allegedly hurting Hindu religious sentiments.The FIR against professor Ravikant Chandan was registered on Tuesday after a clip of his remark surfaced on social media, the ABVP's Avadh Prant organisation secretary Anshul Srivastava told PTI.The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) is a student organisation affiliated to the RSS.The Lucknow University administration has sought a written clarification from the professor, but he said he has not received any such communication.During a debate on a social media platform, I had quoted a popular story from the book 'Feathers and Stones' by Pattabhi Sitaramayya regarding the Kashi temple demolition and building of a mosque, professor Chandan told PTI.The ABVP and other organisations used part of the video to indulge in wrong publicity and instigated people, leading to a mob gathering against me at the university on Tuesday and raising objectionable slogans, he said.The professor added that he could not independently corroborate the story, which described a rape that took place inside the temple complex when Aurangzeb was passing through Varanasi.Chandan said the ABVP used a part of the video to indulge in wrong publicity and instigate people against him.Students of the university took offence over his remark and staged a protest against him, the professor added.According to Srivastava, the professor too lodged an FIR against ABVP activists and some students on Wednesday, alleging that they tried to assault him and created hatred against him through social media.Professor Chandan, however, said that he had also lodged a complaint, but no FIR was registered.Our objection was that without knowing the facts, speaking on a public platform on the basis of a book is not right, and it is least expected from a teacher. It is not just ABVP activists but also common students and all those having faith in the Hindu religion and culture who will be agitated by it and comments in this regard started pouring in from the very first day, Srivastava added.The students wanted to express their objection in a peaceful manner before the proctorial board and ABVP activists were also present there, and things could have been resolved if the professor had expressed regret over the same, but he started sending messages to his people that there is an attempt to lynch him, he said.Professor Chandan, a Dalit, said he was asked to express regret over his remark but casteist remarks were made against him as well.Since I was sitting in the room with the mob knocking at the door, I was disturbed, and in that state, posted on Facebook that it seems like they had gathered to lynch me. I deleted it on objections from ABVP people but still an FIR was lodged against me, he said.The FIR was registered against the professor for allegedly hurting religious sentiments of Hindu students and disturbing communal harmony and tarnishing the image of the university by spreading propaganda through social media.On the ABVP's future course of action, Srivastava said deliberations are on and that they are waiting to see what step the administration takes. Otherwise, students will be forced to stage a protest, he added.

Ahmedabad, May 10 (PTI) Police have registered a case against a fine arts course student of the Maharaja Sayajirao University in Gujarat's Vadodara city for allegedly depicting Hindu Gods and Goddesses in an objectionable manner in his artworks, an official on Tuesday. Some right-wing activists and members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (AVBP) had staged a protest on the university's Faculty of Fine Arts campus on May 5, alleging that Hindu deities were depicted in an objectionable manner in some of the artworks made by students. Based on a complaint given by local ABVP activist Jayvirsinh Raulji, Vadodara's Sayajigunj police on Monday evening registered an FIR against a first-year fine arts student of the university, police inspector R G Jadeja said. The student has been booked under Indian Penal Code Sections 295A (deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage reli­gious feelings of any class by insulting its religion) and 298 (uttering words with deliberate intent to wound religious feelings of any person), he said, adding that the accused has not been arrested so far. In his complaint, Raulji said he had received photos of some objectionable artworks, allegedly prepared by the fine arts students, on his WhatsApp on May 5. Since these artworks were prepared by pasting newspaper reports of rape in the form of cut-outs of various Gods and Goddesses, some ABVP members had rushed to the faculty to verify claims that such artworks will be put on public display in the faculty's exhibition area as part of its exam assessment procedure, the FIR stated. However, when the ABVP members reached the faculty, these artworks were not on the wall of the exhibition area. After some enquiry, the activists learnt that these artworks were prepared by the accused student, as per the FIR. When confronted, the student admitted to having made those artworks, which were later removed, the FIR said, adding that the student had even said he would make such artworks again in future. On May 6, the university's Vice Chancellor, Dr Vijay Kumar Srivastava, had constituted a nine-member fact finding committee to investigate the matter and submit its report.

New Delhi, May 5 (PTI) The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad on Thursday staged a protest in Jawaharlal Nehru University, accusing left organisations of preventing hostel mess workers from preparing food for students.Around 30 members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) gathered in the Sabarmati lawn of the varsity and raised slogans against the left organisations and demanded good food and other amenities for hostel residents.Meanwhile, the JNU Students' Union (JNUSU) has dismissed ABVP claims, saying the sanitisation and mess workers have been observing a strike against the administration and the student union has not prevented anyone from entering the mess area.In a statement, the ABVP condemned what they termed as an anti-student and anti-JNU act by left organisations. They alleged that stopping mess facilities has created a huge burden on students as they are left in the lurch.On May 5, residents of many hostels were not served breakfast and lunch because the Maoist goondas prohibited workers from entering the mess area and forcibly closed the mess. ABVP stands with workers who are crucial stakeholders of university community without whom the university cannot function, alleged ABVP.Meanwhile, All India Central Council of Trade Unions (AICCTU) said hundreds of sanitation and mess workers of the varsity boycotted work on Thursday and continued the indefinite sit-in at the office of Dean of Students in JNU.Several JNUSU members also supported the workers protesting.However, the union denied that they prevented anyone from entering the mess.The workers have not been paid salary for last several months. Ahmedabad, May 5 (PTI) Activists of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and other right-wing outfits on Thursday staged a protest on the campus of Maharaja Sayajirao University's faculty of Fine Arts in Vadodara, alleging that Hindu gods and goddesses were depicted in objectionable manner in some of the artworks made by students. The dean of the faculty, Dr Jayaram Poduval, denied the allegation, while the local police too said they did not find any objectionable artworks as alleged by protesters. Personnel of Sayajigunj police station in Vadodara city rushed to the spot to bring the situation under control after university staff came face to face with the protestors. Artworks prepared by students of the Fine Arts faculty are put on display in the faculty's exhibition area every year as part of exam assessment. This year's exhibition will commence on Friday. Speaking to reporters, Poduval said, I have no idea what they (protestors) are referring to. I have not seen such artworks in the display area. If you see the photos (which went viral and resulted in the protest), the background wall is different from ours. We will take action if a student is found guilty of making such artworks. ABVP leader Nishit Varia claimed the controversial artworks were indeed part of the exhibition, but were removed after the outrage. Protestors had claimed that obscene photos of gods and goddesses are on display. But we have not found those artworks here. There was no reaction from college administration the issue.They further said the students were afraid to come to the college, after which the ABVP unit protested against the college administration.The protesting students also submitted a memorandum to the principal of Kirori Mal college.The college's principal told us that the administration is ready to take action in the interests of the students and will fix all the infrastructure within a month. New Delhi, Apr 15 (PTI) Students' organisations should not talk about breaking the country apart (tukde-tukde), senior RSS leader Dattatreya Hosabale said on Friday, exhorting the ABVP to march forward with enthusiasm to work towards nation-building. Hosabale, who is currently the general secretary of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), has for a long time worked as the organisational secretary of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). Speaking at the release of a compendium of two books recording the 75-year history of the students' organisation, Hosabale described the RSS-affiliated ABVP as the torchbearer of nationalism. Every student organisation by nature is anti-establishment. No doubt about it. At times, the young generation has to raise its voice against the government for welfare of the people, but it (students' organisation) should not call for doing 'tukde-tukde' of the country, Hosabale said without naming any organisation. They should not have a grudge towards society and spread hatred towards civilisation. They should not work to create chaos in society, he added. In the name of revolution, they should not talk about bloodshed in the country. Can they bring revolution by killing their own people? To stop such forces in the universities across the country which want to bring revolution at the behest of gun, ABVP workers have sacrificed their lives, Hosabale said. Hosabale said every student organisation wants to bring about change but the path it chooses to achieve this goal is important as he underlined that the students' organisations should work in a creative way with a sense of responsibility towards society and work for nation-building. Today, slogans are raised inside universities by forces that want to break the country. Such forces want to demoralise the nation by breaking its self-confidence. Amid all this, it is important that an organisation (ABVP) which is the torchbearer of nationalism marches forward with enthusiasm and work towards nation building and overall welfare of the society, Hosabale said. His comments came days after two groups of students clashed at JNU’s Kaveri Hostel on April 10 allegedly over serving of non-vegetarian food on Ram Navami in the mess, with police saying 20 students were injured in the violence.The two students groups lodged police complaints against each other, while varsity authorities claimed the violence occurred after some students objected to a 'hawan', an assertion also made by RSS-affiliate ABVP. Emphasising that the ABVP is more about student activism than student politics, Hosabale said its contribution to develop student strength as national strength has not been recognised yet. Hosabale also said that the ABVP is following what veteran communist leader and former Kerala chief minister EMS Namboodiripad suggested about student organisations in his last days that they should not be a wing of a political party and instead play a contributory role not merely a demanding one. The RSS leader said Namboodiripad made these remarks in an interview on the anniversary of SFI, the left wing student organisation. Similarly, when Marathwada University in Maharashtra was renamed after Babasaheb Ambedkar, senior state leaders Sharad Pawar and Ramdas Athawale had hailed the ABVP for playing a decisive role in it being done peacefully.

Aligarh (UP), Apr 14 (PTI) Members of ABVP, the student wing of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, have sought the district authorities' permission to install loudspeakers at 21 prominent road crossings here for reciting Hanuman Chalisa. Additional District Magistrate (City) Rakesh Patel said the administration has received an application from the ABVP and is looking into the matter. The administration is looking into the legal ramifications of the issue and would take a decision accordingly, the ADM told reporters Wednesday evening. Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad’s former state secretary Baldev Choudhary, meanwhile, told media persons here on Wednesday that they were waiting for the district administration’s decision on the issue. If we do not receive necessary permission, we will decide our future course of action, Choudhary said. Volunteers of some right-wing groups, meanwhile, have started a drive in some parts of the city to collect donations for procuring loudspeakers and other equipment for installing them in the different parts of the city.

We demanded that the university ensure the safety of the victims of a Left attack from further attacks, they said.Meanwhile, in a statement, the Kaveri Hostel Committee and the Mess Committee demanded that a press release issued by the JNU administration office be taken back immediately.An independent enquiry be held upon the wardens of Kaveri hostel over their complete incapability and disregard for containing the violence, and they must be suspended. If the enquiry finds them guilty, then the warden(s) must resign, they said.Representatives of the JNU administration must meet the victims of the attack at Kaveri hostel, identify the perpetrators of the violence and initiate legal action accordingly, the statement said.

New Delhi, Apr 12 (PTI) Some JNU students called and said chicken should not be supplied to the varsity's Kaveri Hostel mess on Ram Navami, claimed Afzal Ahmed, who has been delivering meat to it for nearly three decades.Clashes had broken out between two student groups on April 10 allegedly over serving of non-vegetarian food at the mess, even as varsity authorities claimed the violence occurred after some students objected to a 'hawan' on the festive day, an assertion also made by RSS-affiliate ABVP.Ahmed told PTI that the callers were students of the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and he knew them. It has never happened that I have been asked not to supply meat (at hostels) as there is a festival being celebrated, he said.Left-leaning student bodies and the Left-led JNU Students' Union (JNUSU) have alleged that ABVP members stopped the mess vendor from supplying chicken and attacked him on April 10 afternoon.However, the right-wing Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) denied the charge, asserting that Leftists obstructed a puja organised at the hostel on Ram Navami and were using diversionary tactics by raising the issue of serving of non-vegetarian food.Ahmed said, On the morning of April 10, I got a call from some JNU students asking me not to supply meat to the Kaveri Hostel. I told them that I had received the order on April 9. But they threatened me saying if I supplied meat to the hostel, they would ensure that I am not able to supply meat to other JNU hostels. I told them I will come down and speak to them, he told PTI.On April 10, a Sunday, Ahmed, who has a shop in Indira Market, said that he reached the Kaveri Hostel around 2.15 pm and saw that members of the mess committee and the people, who had called him in the morning, were having a discussion.There were three to four men from both the sides. I sat there for sometime but then I thought they would take time so I left to supply chicken to the messes of other hostels on the JNU campus, he said.Cooking begins at the messes from 4 pm, and dinner is served from 7:30 pm onwards. So, I left the spot to deliver chicken to the messes of other hostels, Ahmed said.Besides the Kaveri Hostel, there are 17 more hostels on the varsity's campus.Ahmed said that around 4 pm, he received a call from the Kaveri Hostel mess secretary asking him to come and deliver the chicken.I stopped my car and my workers started taking out the meat to be supplied to the hostel mess. At that time, five to seven men came and started threatening me. They even got into a scuffle with some mess committee members. They closed the hostel gate to stop me from entering it, he said.Scared that the situation could worsen, Ahmed said he asked his workers to keep the meat back in the vehicle and that they left from there.On Sunday, I was stopped at none of the other hostels. In fact, I have been supplying meat to JNU for the last 25-30 years and never has it happened that I have been asked not to supply meat as there is a festival being celebrated, he said.Even on Sunday, the Kaveri Hostel mess secretary asked me whether I faced problems in supplying meat to any other hostel but I told that there were no issues elsewhere, Ahmed said.Wednesday, Friday and Sunday are the days when non-vegetarian food is served at the Kaveri Hostel mess. Similar rules are followed by the other JNU hostels too.I supply around 250 kg to 300 kg of meat to JNU. In some hostels, two days are reserved for serving non-vegetarian food and in others, non-vegetarian food is cooked on three days of the week, Ahmed said.I am scared now as to what will happen when I return to the campus. But students will eat non-vegetarian food. If the mess committee or mess warden will assure me of my safety, I will feel better, he said.The ABVP claimed on Monday that seven days ago there was a general body meeting (GBM) of the Kaveri Hostel mess committee where it was unanimously decided that no non-vegetarian food will be cooked in its mess on Sunday on the occasion of Ram Navami.Raghib, the mess secretary of Kaveri Hostel, had denied that there was any GBM held on the matter.I got a message from the mess warden a day prior to Sunday that non-vegetarian food should not be served tomorrow. I asked him to give it in writing but he didn't do it, he had said.Non-vegetarian food is served in the Kaveri Hostel mess on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday and the menu is pre-decided at the beginning of the month, he had said. The mess committee of the hostels is a student-run body.According to the hostel manual of the university, each hostel mess has a mess committee consisting of Warden (Mess) as ex-officio chairman and six students elected by the residents of the hostel to supervise functioning of the mess.

New Delhi, Apr 11 (PTI) A day after clashes broke out at the Jawaharlal Nehru University's Kaveri Hostel mess allegedly over serving of non-vegetarian food, the security guards on Monday were asking students to show their identity cards to enter the hostel. According to a student, who did not wish to be identified, the security guards were even asking residents to show ID cards. A guest can enter the hostel without any bar till 11pm, but today they are asking guests for IDs and to enter their names in the register, he said. Inside the hostel mess, a few shards of glass were lying on the floor, reminiscent of the incident that happened on Sunday night. Behind the hostel mess, there is an open area where a tent was erected and a puja was performed on the occasion of Ram Navami. The place still had the ‘hawan kund’ kept there. Two groups of students on Sunday had clashed allegedly over the serving of non-vegetarian food in the hostel mess. The JNU Students’ Union (JNUSU), which is led by Left-affiliate outfits, has alleged that the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) supporters attacked the students while opposing the serving of non-vegetarian food in the Kaveri Hostel mess on the Hindu festival. The ABVP, however, denied the charge and claimed that Leftists obstructed a 'puja' organised at the hostel on Ram Navami. Both sides had accused each other of pelting stones and injuring their members. Meanwhile, a student at the university, who was injured during the clashes on Sunday, alleged that ambulances were not allowed to enter the varsity campus and she had to take an auto to reach the hospital. Several purported videos of the violence surfaced on social media, with one of them showing a student, Akhtarista Ansari, bleeding from the head. Ansari who is pursuing Masters in sociology at JNU said that on Sunday, at about 8pm, when she got to know about the violence, she immediately rushed to Kaveri Hostel and saw that the ABVP goons were brutally attacking the students with stones and rods. Women students were sexually harassed by the ABVP members present there. I was attacked on my head with a heavy stone. Despite being injured, they did not allow the ambulance to enter inside. So, I took a backside route and hired an auto to reach the hospital, she alleged. I got myself treated at AIIMS and I sustained around four stitches to my head, she told reporters. Prabhanshu Kajla, a PHD student who was also injured in the violence at Kaveri Hostel, said, They (ABVP supporters) snatched phones of students and manhandled us. Security guards were also attacked. They beat me up once. I then rushed to Godavari dhaba, where they came in groups following me and thrashed me their again brutally. My friend Harender, who was coming from the other side, was also attacked with a wiper, he alleged. He added that he received five-six stitches to different parts of the body. Another victim who is a female from the RSS-affiliate ABVP alleged that she was attacked by a group when she was going to the library around 8 pm after the Ram Navami puja on the Kaveri lawn. Suddenly, some people started abusing me and they attacked me with knives, stones and sticks. They harassed me physically. When I opposed, they started beating me up and injured me in my right arm, back and legs... she alleged.

JNU clash: Students asked to show identity cards to enter hostel

New Delhi, Apr 11 (PTI) Hundreds of JNU students affiliated to AISA staged protests at Delhi Police headquarters and Tughlaq Road police station on Monday, demanding the arrest of ABVP activists for their alleged role in the violence at the university which left several injured.A senior police officer said 70 protesters were detained and taken to Mandir Marg and Tughlaq Road police stations. They were released later.In the evening, students staged a dharna outside Tughlaq Road police station and called it off only after those detained were released. Among those detained, 48 were male and the remaining 22 were female protestors. All of them have been released. A case has been registered against them under appropriate sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), a senior police officer said.Members of the Left-controlled All India Students' Association (AISA) said they will hold a protest again on Tuesday. However, they did not reveal the protest venue.Two groups had clashed at the Jawaharlal Nehru University's Kaveri Hostel here on Sunday allegedly over serving of non-vegetarian food in the mess on Ram Navami. Police said they have received 20 medicolegal cases of students who were injured in the incident.AISA activist Neha alleged that women protesters were manhandled by security personnel during the protest.Women protesters were manhandled and their clothes were pulled by male security personnel. Several protesters were injured. We have been detained inside the Tughlaq Road police station, she said.A senior police officer denied the allegations.We have detained them because they were trying to protest near the police headquarters at Jai Singh Marg. They were detained before they could reach the spot and taken to Tughlaq Road police station.Another group of protesters, who came later, have also been detained and taken to Mandir Marg police station, the officer said.AISA president Sai Balaji said the protest will continue.Our protest is going to continue. People who attacked the students are repeat offenders and so is the JNU administration.Protest at the PHQ (police headquarters) was to ensure accountability of the Delhi Police and ensure that justice happens. The Delhi Police on Monday registered an FIR against unidentified members of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh-affiliated Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) based on the complaint received from a group of students in connection with the clash in JNU.Anagha Pradeep, JNUSU councillor, said, In this university, the ABVP and the RSS orchestrated a big incident again and unleashed violence in the name of food. All the 16 hostels in JNU serve both non-vegetarian and vegetarian food. Recalling the sequence of events on Sunday, she said when the vendor came to supply meat to Kaveri Hostel, the ABVP activists tried to attack him and heckle him.He was told that he won't be spared and was asked to leave the campus. They said non-vegetarian food will not be prepared here. The mess committee members, who were present there, were also attacked and heckled, she alleged.After that, students went to the warden to ask him to ensure that the Kaveri Hostel residents are provided food since an insufficient amount had been prepared owing to the diktat on non-vegetarian food.The vegetarian food was only sufficient for less than 100 people and there are about 400 students who stay in Kaveri Hostel. It was necessary to ensure that food was available for all the residents of Kaveri, Pradeep said.While students were talking to the warden, ABVP activists arrived there and attacked several students, she alleged.Water coolers were thrown at students. Guards and the warden were not doing anything. The phones of some of the students, who were making videos, were snatched and broken by the ABVP members.As soon as we stepped out of the mess, they started pelting stones. They used wipers, flower pots and whatever they could lay their hands on. Many students sustained injuries. They are spreading lies that we thrashed them. Nothing of that sort happened. We have evidence to prove their claims wrong, she said.Pradeep alleged that even in the presence of police, the ABVP tried to attack students.All this happened in front of the Delhi Police and yet there have been no arrests in the matter, she said.Another student councillor, Apeksha, said it is a known fact that every Sunday, non-vegetarian food is prepared in every hostel.Barring Kaveri Hostel, non-vegetarian food was prepared in every other hostel of JNU on Sunday, she said.Nobody in the hostels had any issues but the ABVP activists said they are organising a puja on the occasion of Ram Navami and won't allow meat to be served.After heckling the meat vendor, the ABVP members also heckled the mess committee members when they went to them, she claimed.The students' union called a meeting around 7.30 pm to discuss the issue, but then they learnt that violence had broken out in Kaveri Hostel, she said.Initially, the ABVP members kicked and punched the students and also hurled sexist abuses and rape threats. Two guards were also seriously injured. One of the guards was hit with a tubelight, she said.Apeksha said she called the police to inform them about the violence.The police said they were on the other side of the gate but didn't stop the violence. From 4 pm, students had been continuously calling the police to inform them about the situation but there was no response, she added.The police, however, denied the allegations.A senior police officer said the first call was received at around 8.15 pm following which the teams rushed to the spot.The situation was brought under control after the police teams arrived, he said.

New Delhi, Apr 11 (PTI) The JNU administration on Monday warned students against indulging in any kind of violence on campus and said the clashes broke out on Sunday after some students objected to a 'hawan' conducted peacefully on the occasion of Ram Navami, an assertion also made by the RSS-affiliated ABVP. However, the JNU Students Union (JNUSU), which is led by Left-affiliated outfits, has alleged that ABVP members attacked the students while opposing the serving of non-vegetarian food in the Kaveri Hostel mess on the Hindu festival. In a statement, the university clarified there is no bar on serving non-vegetarian food, stressing that the mess is run by the student committee and the administration has nothing to do with their menu. Police said that 20 people were injured in the Sunday clashes between the two groups. Taking serious note of the incident, the Vice Chancellor, rector and other officials visited the hostel and met the students. The VC conveyed that no violence will be tolerated on campus and appealed to the students to maintain peace and harmony, the JNU Registrar said in an official appeal to the students. JNU administration reiterates its resolve for zero tolerance towards any form of violence on campus. The students are also warned to refrain from involving in such incidents which disturb the peace and harmony on campus. If anyone is found indulging in such acts, they will be liable for disciplinary action as per university rules, he added. In the statement issued later in the day, the university said that there was a scuffle on the campus on April 10 between student groups. It was the occasion of Rama Navami and Hawan was organised by the students in the Kaveri Hostel and there were who were objecting to this. The wardens and Dean of Students tried to pacify and the Hawan was concluded peacefully. Despite this, some group of students were not happy with this and soon after, at the time of dinner, a ruckus was created over there and heated arguments were followed by an altercation between both the groups in the Kaveri Hostel, said the statement by JNU registrar. He claimed that seven days back, there was a General Body Meeting of Kaveri Hostel mess committee where it was unanimously decided that no non-vegetarian food will be cooked in the hostel mess on Sunday on the occasion of Ram Navami. He also alleged that the left students even brought out a fake handwritten circular on April 9, a day before the puja. The puja was supposed to begin at 3.30 pm on April 10 but these students came to disrupt it. They had to return seeing the huge crowd of devotees. Finally the puja started at 5.30 pm and at 8.30 pm they came armed with stones, sticks, lathis, CFL tubes and started attacking students, he said. He said that the ABVP did not have any issue with non-vegetarian food being served. In other hostels like Koyna, Periyar, etc. non-vegetarian food was served yesterday. The Left are playing diversionary tactics. We cannot dictate food choices but neither can the left do that, he said. I got a message from the mess warden a day prior to Sunday that non vegetarian food should not be served tomorrow. I asked him to give it in writing but he didn't do it, he said. Mumbai, Apr 11 (PTI) The NCP on Monday condemned the clash between two groups of students at JNU in Delhi a day earlier and accused the BJP of communalising secular educational institutions through the RSS-affiliated Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). Maharashtra NCP chief spokesperson Mahesh Tapase accused the BJP of wanting to disturb social harmony and bring in authoritarian and majoritarian rule in the country, and, hence, its volunteers were working in this manner. Two groups of students clashed at Jawaharlal Nehru University's (JNU) Kaveri Hostel on Sunday allegedly over serving of non-vegetarian food in the mess on Ram Navami, with police saying six students were injured in the incident. The Left-controlled JNU Students' Union (JNUSU) and RSS-affiliated Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad accused each other of pelting stones and injuring their members. The Leftist outfits claimed about 50 of their members were injured, while the ABVP said 10-12 of its activists were hurt. The NCP strongly condemns the incident of violence at the JNU campus…The BJP is communalising our secular educational institutions through ABVP. It has been observed time and again that ABVP volunteers have been trying to enforce their right-wing ideologies on students of various institutions, Tapase alleged. This is a direct attempt to weaken the secular framework of the very institution itself. Our acceptance to respect and live peacefully in a diverse and plural society is the main reason for discontent and, hence, BJP volunteers react in a manner only to disturb the peaceful dispensation,” the NCP leader added. Tapase further claimed the time was not far when students of minority and backward classes will be rejected from government employment as part of a larger design of communal hatred. The violence initiated by the ABVP is a strategic move in the direction to scare and polarise the student community, he said, adding that it was absolutely shameful how BJP workers are wanting to dictate what students should eat, what they should wear, how they should behave.

New Delhi, Apr 11 (PTI) Security has been tightened at the Jawaharlal Nehru University to maintain peace and ensure no untoward incident takes place again, a day after a clash in the campus over non-vegetarian food, police said on Monday. Two groups of students clashed at the Jawaharlal Nehru University's Kaveri Hostel on Sunday allegedly over serving of non-vegetarian food on Ram Navami in the mess, with police saying six students were injured in the violence. According to police, the security both inside and outside the campus has been stepped up. Police personnel have been deployed only outside the campus till now while the security inside the campus is being taken care of by the university's security guards. Our personnel have not been deployed inside the JNU campus yet because the varsity has not requested for our security yet. However, we are monitoring the situation, a senior police officer said. We have deployed our teams outside the campus. If the university makes a request, definitely our personnel will be deployed inside the campus. The university has its own security which has been deployed inside the campus, the officer added. According to sources, the Vice-Chancellor of the university Santishree D Pandit was outstation when the incident took place and as the information reached her, she immediately reached last night to monitor the situation. Several purported videos of the violence surfaced on social media, with one of them showing a student, Akhtarista Ansari, bleeding from the head. Officials have not confirmed the authenticity of the videos. Further investigation is on to collect factual or scientific evidence and identify the culprits, he said. The officer added that students belonging to ABVP have also intimated that they will be giving a complaint. On receipt of the same, necessary appropriate legal action will be taken. Around 7.45 pm, they came inside the mess and first attacked students with fists and then with items they could find inside,” she alleged. “Students started running towards the main gate to save themselves but ABVP activists picked up flower pots, sticks to attack students. I was hit on the head and near the eye while Akhtarista Ansari, a second year MA student of Sociology, was hit on the head. She lost vision for a few moments,” she claimed. Another student of JNU, Jahanvi Sodha, who claimed to be unaffiliated uploaded a video on social media saying, “I am a witness to what happened.” “In the evening, students came to the Kaveri Hostel mess and saw that the ABVP activists were already present there. They were hurling abuses and in response, some women students called them ''cowards'' (darpok). They were so enraged that they started attacking the women by throwing water coolers and when they started to escape, the ABVP activists hurled stones and broke the glass doors of the mess. Women students were severely injured, she has said in the video. The ABVP, however, rejected JNUSU's allegations and claimed that “Leftists” disrupted a puja and havan organised by some unaffiliated students at 3:30 pm at the Kaveri Hostel on the occasion of Ram Navami. “The Leftists came to object, obstruct and prevent the puja. They have created a false ruckus on the issue of Right to Food, (Non-Vegetarian Food),” they said. The ABVP said that posters of the puja had been put up three days ago and since then, members of the Left and the Congress-affiliated National Students' Union of India were threatening and saying they won’t allow the puja to be held. “There is no angle of the non-veg food. Ten to 12 activists of ABVP have been left injured. When students were coming out after the puja, they were caught unawares as student from the Left outfits started pelting stones and attacking us with sticks,” said the ABVP. After the violence, both the sides took out protest marches to action against each other. Police denied allegations of being a mute spectator at the spot and said as soon as they received a PCR call, they rushed with their teams and ensured that no further escalation of violence. Late on Sunday night, members from both parties went to police station and demanded FIRs to be registered based on their complaints. We have assured the students that their complaints will be taken note of and accordingly we will take appropriate legal actions, a senior police official said. Beating dhaplis, students marched inside the campus raising anti-ABVP slogans. They also shared videos of ABVP activists purportedly attacking students with wipers and sticks. Another purported video showed ABVP activists raising slogans of Jai Shri Ram and creating a ruckus inside the Kaveri Hostel, which is at the centre of the scuffle. A third video showed some students attacking a vendor who had gone to the mess for supplying chicken. The ABVP also marched inside the campus to protest against Left outfits. They shared purported videos of students alleging that they had been thrashed by activists of Left-affiliated outfits. In a video shared by the right-wing outfit, Divya, a JNU student says, I was fasting the whole day and hadn't eaten anything. I had gone to attend the puja and after the puja we were attacked by Left activists. They hit my hand with a bottle and I was left severely injured. The video shows her hand bandaged. In another video shared by the ABVP, a B.A second year student of French, Vijay Pradhan, says, I told them that I am differently-abled, but they didn't spare me and kept attacking me and thrashing me.
