With its renowned marching band, Alabama A&M University has created history by being the first historically underrepresented college (HBCU) to lead the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. The Alabama A&M University Marching Maroon and White are proud to lead the way in the 97th Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, led by Director of University Bands Carlton Wright. Accompanying them is The Dancin’ Divas, the band’s side project, who will present a unique concert at Radio City Music Hall that pays homage to the legendary Rockettes.

Millions of people watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade every year, both live and from the comfort of their homes. It is difficult to get a position in this renowned event, but Carlton Wright, the director of university bands, persevered in going after this chance.

Wright painstakingly assembled entries, recommendation letters, films, and recordings over the course of six weeks to finish the demanding application procedure. The official confirmation that Alabama A&M had been chosen came in February 2022, marking the pinnacle of his efforts.

The Marching Maroon and White band spent many hours getting ready for what they hoped would be an unforgettable 75-second show. Wright and the band are filled with excitement and expectation as the big day draws near.

Wright said, “It feels like everything is coming to reality now for me,” as he considered the trip. Beginning with the application process, moving through it, and making a few flights to New York to attend meetings up there “And it’s really real now,” he continued. Thus, while we’re excited and a little anxious about it, However, we shall be alright once we go on the parade’s first step.

Wright has higher hopes for the band in the future. Beyond their debut at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, he sees the band participating in Pasadena, California’s Tournament of Roses Parade.
