Chat platform Discord, which is known to be popular with video game players, is reportedly exploring to sell itself  for more than $10 billion, reported AFP. Microsoft Corp is in talks to buy messaging platform Discord, according to Bloomberg.

Discord was prompted to consider the options after interests from potential buyers, according to tech news website VentureBeat. Discord, however, told AFP that it does not comment on “rumors or speculation.”

VentureBeat cited unnamed sources familiar with the matter, adding that the popular chat platform has gotten interest from potential suitors.

Launched around six years ago as a platform for video game fans to communicate on while playing, the San Francisco-based company has since become a venue where friends get together to chat, virtually watch films or even work.

Use of Discord has increased during the pandemic, as people turned to the internet to stay connected while keeping their distance to reduce chances of exposure to coronavirus.

It has also been used by US conspiracy and supremacist movements after some were banned from mainstream online social media platforms due to election violence.

According to Venture Beat, despite having more than 140 million monthly active users, Discord is still in a growth phase. The Wall Street Journal reported that in 2020 Discord generated $130 million in revenue, up from nearly $45 million in 2019.
