US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said in a statement released on Friday that “America’s heart has been broken” while condemning the attack on the US Capitol Hill on April 2. 

Earlier on Friday, Noah Green, a 25-year-old man, rammed his car into the barricading in front of the US Capitol, several injuring two officers. One officer, William “Billy” Evans succumbed to his injuries after being hit by the car.

Pelosi said in the statement, “Today, America’s heart has been broken by the tragic and heroic death of one of our Capitol Police heroes: Officer William Evans. He is a martyr for our democracy.”

William Billy had been serving in USCP for the past 18 years.

“May we always remember the heroism of those who have given their lives to defend our Democracy.  May it be a comfort to the family of Officer Evans that so many mourn with them and pray for them at this sad time,” the statement further said. 

Green, who was armed with a knife, was shot dead by the Capitol police when he started to lunge “toward US Capitol Police officers.”

Pelosi said, “Congress stands ready to assist law enforcement with a swift and comprehensive investigation into this heinous attack.”

Pelosi also announced that the flags in Capitol Hill will be flown at half-mast to pay respect to the deceased officer.
