Gary Lineker remained the BBC’s highest-paid presenter for the fiscal year 2021–2022. Some significant wages were cut from the payroll as a result of the broadcaster’s ongoing departure of prominent personalities.

Lineker earned £1.35 million last year for hosting Match of the Day and presenting coverage of Euro 2020, easily surpassing Radio 2 breakfast host Zoe Ball, who came in second with £980,000.

Alan Shearer, Lineker’s coworker on Match of the Day, Stephen Nolan, the BBC Northern Ireland presenter, and Huw Edwards, the News at Ten anchor, are among the other top earnings listed in the company’s annual report. Each earned £450,000. Numerous celebrities earned raises in remuneration, with Radio 1’s Greg James receiving an additional £80,000.

A number of those who were on the highest-paid list for 2021 have since left the BBC to work for commercial rivals, freeing up Dan Walker’s £220,000 income, Emily Maitlis’ £325,000 annual compensation, and former North America editor Jon Sopel’s £225,000 salary.

Tim Davie, director general of the BBC, claimed that despite competition from corporate rivals, overall spending on top presenters had remained fairly flat. His salary jumped 10% to £522,000.

Since the BBC was forced by the government to disclose the incomes of its top-paid stars, it has been desperately attempting to reduce pay and let go of some of its highest earners while continuing to reduce the licence fee in real terms.

Among other male stars among the top earners in BBC include Greg James with a salary of £390,000, Ken Bruce with a salary of £385,000, George Alagiah with a salary of £325,000 and Amol Rajan with a salary of £325,000.
