Three young children were found dead at Coney Island beach early Monday, and police are now looking into whether their mother drowned them.

Around 3 a.m., cops were called to the Brighton Beach boardwalk near Beach 6th Street. Authorities said the incident occurred after a relative called 911, concerned that a 30-year-old woman had drowned her children.

Coney Island is a neighbourhood and entertainment district in the southwestern borough of Brooklyn, New York City.

The youngsters, a three-month-old baby, a four-year-old girl, and a seven-year-old boy, were discovered by the police after they conducted a check of the area around West 35th Street and the boardwalk.

First responders were seen carrying the kids in their arms in upsetting photos.

The three were all taken to Coney Island Hospital and declared dead at 5:38 a.m., according to authorities.

The 30-year-old mother of the kids, who was described as “despondent,” was apprehended and brought to the 60th Precinct for additional inquiry.

Police said during a press conference that the children’s mother, was found wet and barefoot two miles away from the children. According to NYPD Chief Kenneth Corey, she was not “communicative towards the officers.”

Police were still looking into the incident hours later even though no charges had been immediately brought.

Officers knocked on a door that went unanswered, but when they entered, they found a guy who identified himself as the father of one of the kids and expressed concern for the kids’ safety.

The police were informed by that man that he thought the mother and kids were on the boardwalk.

Any witnesses are urged to come forward by police. They said that it didn’t seem like the woman had ever been the victim of abuse or neglect in the past.
