The 2020 Grammy Awards, like most other years, were a resounding
success, and likely the last major offline event organised in the music-entertainment sphere before the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic in
March.

The awards, ranging from Pop to Electronic to Contemporary,
Jazz, R&B or Classical and many more categories, pooled into a total list
that consisted of hundreds of artists with their tracks and several nominations
across categories, understandably made choosing ‘the one’ for each category,
and deciding what made them stand out amongst all the nominees, a difficult
task.

There was, however, an artist who shined through and so in her
own right.

Billie Eilish, the US singer, 18-year-old at the time, won
five out of her six nominations. The categories Eilish won in included song of
the year, best pop vocal album, album of the year, record of the year, and best
new artist. Her track ‘Bad Guy’, absolutely loved by the internet and the
Grammy judges alike, was crowned the song of the year, whereas ‘When We Fall
Asleep, Where Do We Go?’ bagged three awards for being best vocal pop album as
well as album of the year and the best record of the year.

She made history by being the youngest person to be
nominated for, and winning, awards in all four of the general categories stated
above at the same time. Eilish further became the first woman to win the four
awards in the same night, as well as second artist in the history of the award
show to ever do so, after Christopher Cross in 1981.

Shortly following her were other artists such as Lizzo.
Though the singer could not take away as many awards as Eilish, as the night
decidedly looked like a coronation for the latter, Lizzo had a total of five
nominations, and among them three awards – namely, Pop Solo performance,
Traditional R&B Performance, and for the Urban Contemporary Album of the
year in Pop music.

Eilish’s brother and fellow Grammy winner Finneas O’Connell
was also a winner in several categories, such as Album of the Year, Producer of
the Year, Non-classical etc. O’Connell’s work in his sister’s album won him the
‘Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical’ award as well.
