The U.S. Capitol, a symbol of American democracy, has not been immune to violence. From a British arson attack during the War of 1812 to the tumultuous events leading up to the Civil War, the Capitol’s history is marked by incidents of dueling, fistfights, and even a shooting of a senator on the Senate floor.

Throughout the years, non-members of Congress have also launched attacks, such as the 1915 bombing by a former German professor and the 1954 shooting by Puerto Rican nationalists. In more recent years, bombings claimed by groups like the Weather Underground and the Armed Resistance Unit have caused significant damage, highlighting the ongoing security challenges faced by the iconic building.
