Former President Donald Trump called his accuser E Jean Carroll his wife, mistaking her to be his second wife, Marla Maples in a photo, according to recently unsealed transcripts of his deposition.

During his October 2022 deposition, Trump was shown a black and white photo, in which he was seen interacting with several people, including his then-wife Ivana, Carroll, and her then-husband.

Trump reportedly had a hard time recognizing Carroll. “I don’t know who – it’s Marla. That’s Marla, yeah. That’s my wife,” he said when asked to clarify. Then Alina Habba, Trump’s lawyer then interjected to explain to the former leader that it was not his ex-wife in the photo. “No, that’s Carroll,” she said, according to the transcript.

After Trump denied sexually assaulting the former magazine columnist, he was sued by her in 2019. In November, she filed a second lawsuit against Trump for battery even though the statute of limitations on the crime had passed. Trump has maintained that he never pressured a woman to have sex with him.

In his deposition transcript, Trump reiterated his previous comments that he didn’t know Carroll and that she isn’t his type. He also added that while it is not “politically correct” to say she isn’t his type, he said he had to defend himself, adding that it wasn’t meant to be an insult.

When Trump was questioned if he ever kissed a woman without her consent, Trump said, “Well, I don’t … I can’t think of any complaints. But no. I mean, I don’t think so.” He also denied ever touching a woman’s breasts or buttocks.

As to whether he had pressured a woman to have sexual intercourse with him, he replied, “The answer is no. But you may have some people, like your client, who are willing to lie.”
