Former US President Donald Trump has lashed out against the January 6 House committee after reports surfaced that the panel are looking to issue criminal referrals to the Department of Justice against him regarding his involvement in the Capitol riots.

Trump has taken to his social media platform, TRUTH Social, to voice his opinions against the House committee. He accused them of “illegally leaking confidential info”.

The former President has also posted pictures of him asking rioters on Jan 6, 2021 to maintain peace. However, it has come to light via the testimony of Sarah Matthews, the former deputy press secretary of the White House, that Trump was adamant to not mention peace while sending out messages on the day of the riot. However, he had to give in to his advisors.

CNN reports that one close aide of the former President has said, “We know this is happening, and we need to be prepared to publicly deal with it”.

During the committee meeting, Liz Cheney said that the transfer of power in a peaceful manner is “at the heart of our Republic.”

“Members of Congress are reminded of this every day, as we pass through the Capitol rotunda. There, eight magnificent paintings detail the earliest days of our Republic”, continued Cheney, further adding, “One painted by John Trumbull depicts the moment in 1793, when George Washington resigned his commission, handing control of the continental army back to Congress.”

Rep. Bennie Thompson, the chairman of the committee said, “I believe nearly two years later, this is still a time of reflection and reckoning,” further adding, “If we are to survive as a nation of laws and democracy, this can never happen again.”
