In a shooting on a busy street in Fargo, North Dakota, one police officer died and two others were gravely injured, according to police. The event also resulted in the death of the suspect.

Around 3 p.m. on Friday, witnesses claimed a guy fired on police before being shot by other policemen. Soon after, police swarmed a neighborhood approximately 2 miles away, evacuated the residents, and began gathering what they claimed to be relevant evidence in relation to the shooting.

The circumstances or potential motive for the shooting were not disclosed by the police. Prior to informing their families, the names of the suspect and the killed cops were kept hidden. According to the Fargo Police Department, the investigation is ongoing.

One woman who was driving claimed that she witnessed the officers collapse. Shannon Nichole told KFGO Radio, “I saw the traffic stop and as soon as I drove, shots were fired and I saw the cops go down. My airbag went off and the bullet went through my driver’s door.” Nichole reported that a man grabbed her later and asked her to leave the area.

Paul Heinert, a spokesman for Sanford Medical Centre Fargo, stated in an email that the facility “did receive patients stemming from today’s shooting incident in Fargo.” He added that the Fargo Police Department will provide updates on their conditions.

Gregg Schildberger, the city’s chief communications officer, confirmed that Fargo police intend to release more information at a press conference on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.

“We sincerely are asking for your patience and our community’s patience and understanding as the Fargo Police Department works through this incident,” Schildberger said Friday evening. “This is very difficult on all of us,” Schildberger said. “We appreciate all the messages from the community that have been given to us in support of our officers.”
