In what he called a “formal travel advisory for socialists visiting Florida,” Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.) warned on Tuesday that the state was “openly hostile” to socialists and those who support them.

Scott, who is also the state’s former governor, said in a press release that Florida “devalues and marginalizes the contributions of, and the challenges faced by Socialists and others who work in the Biden Administration.”

“Let me be clear – any attempts to spread the oppression and poverty that Socialism always brings will be rebuffed by the people of Florida,” he added. “Travelers should be aware that attempts to spread Socialism in north Florida will fail and be met with laughter and mockery.”

Scott’s remarks are a mocking response to a recent statement by social justice organizations that Florida is unsafe for some minority groups.

The statement drew some major flak from critics of Scott who were quick to draw comparisons in his role in the fraud against Medicare. One Twitter user wrote, “Rick Scott was convicted of stealing millions from Medicare fraudulently. And his fine was a mere pittance. How he is a US Senator is beyond comprehension.” Another user said, “Rick Scott is threatening Americans. Never mind that Rick Scott committed the largest fraud against Medicare in history.”

Meanwhile one more person said, “Have you heard about the Republican Party’s MAGA-NOMICS? It involves cutting veterans’ healthcare and benefits. GOP Senators Lindsey Graham, Rick Scott, and Mike Lee want to gut Social Security and Medicare. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis wants to privatize Social Security.” Another twitter user said, “Just want to politely nudge reporters covering Rick Scott‘s comments today to remind them that they might also want to mention in brief how he made a career profiting from a government program of actual socialism!”

Scott, who has frequently acted as President Biden’s political adversary, used vocabulary similar to that in the NAACP’s advisory, appearing to make fun of the risks mentioned by the civil rights organization by drawing comparisons to Biden.
