Two days after a suicide bombing in a mosque in Afghanistan’s Kandahar province killed at least 60 worshippers and injured more than 80, the Islamic State has threatened that Shiite Muslims will be targeted everywhere.

The terrorist group had claimed responsibility of the deadly attack saying two of the their members shot and killed security guards manning the entrance of the Fatimiya mosque.

“From Baghdad to Khorasan, Shi’ite Muslims will be targeted everywhere,” IS said, as per a report by the Khama Press News Agency on Sunday.

Friday’s attack was the deadliest to strike Afghanistan since the US exit from the country, which allowed the Taliban to seize control of the Kabul Presidential palace. It was also the first major attack by the group in the country’s south.

The Islamic State’s weekly, Al-Naba published the warning.

It read that the Shiite Muslims will be targeted in their homes and centres and the Islamic State Khorasan (IS-K) remains the biggest threat to the Taliban-ruled government in Afghanistan, rhe Khaama Press report said.

Friday’s attack came a week after a bombing claimed by the local Islamic State affiliate killed 46 people at a Shiite mosque in northern Afghanistan, raising fears that IS — an enemy of both the Taliban and the West — is expanding its foothold in Afghanistan.

The attacks have brought into question the Taliban’s ability to counter the growing IS threat.

The Taliban have pledged to restore peace and security after decades of war and have also given the U.S. assurances that they will not allow the country to be used as a base for launching extremist attacks on other countries.
