The Mega Millions jackpot has grown to $1.02 billion after no ticket matched all six winning numbers in Tuesday night’s game.

If a winning ticket is picked on Friday, the $1.02 billion prize will be the third largest in the game’s 20-year history, according to the Mega Millions website.

It is only the fourth billion-dollar lottery win in US history, and the third time a Mega Millions jackpot has gone into the tens of millions of dollars.

For more than three months, the prize has been increasing. According to Mega Millions, the odds of winning are currently one in 302.6 million.

The most recent jackpot winner revealed following the April 15 drawing, received a $20 million top prize – nothing but a minuscule percentage of the current jackpot, which would be the fourth-largest lottery reward ever won in the United States.

Lottery winners can choose to receive their wins in the form of an annuity, with payments spread out over 30 years, or the more popular alternative, a single lump sum payout in a smaller amount. A Mega Millions winner on Friday would get a lump sum payout of around $602.5 million.
