A power outage in Norwich, Connecticut on Friday saw more than half the city’s customers without electricity, an NPU spokesman said.
The outage was caused by equipment failure in the utility’s 10th Street substation, spokesman Chris Riley said.
“This is a very significant issue,” Riley said.

Riley added that about 11,000 of the city’s 21,000 customers lost power in the outage.
“We anticipate that power will be restored to all customers within the next 60-90 minutes. Once power is safely restored, we will begin a thorough investigation of what caused this outage to occur,”the company’s Facebook post said.

As promised, the NPU managed to restore power around 8 PM.
“Power has been restored for all customers impacted by tonight’s major outage. We will undertake a thorough investigation to see exactly what happened within the substation and to see what we can do to prevent this type of thing from happening again. Thanks for everyone’s patience – have a great weekend,” the NYU said in a Facebook post.

Only earlier this month, the Norwich Public Utilities (NPU) announced that it is preparing to respond to severe weather.

“While we are very proud of our storm-response performance in the past, we will never be complacent. Providing our customers with the best possible information before and during a storm is a critical part of our strategy during any major storm,” Chris LaRose, General Manager of NPU said.
As part of its enhanced customer communications efforts, NPU is implementing two new technologies, the press release said.
