A man was killed and 12 others were injured after a car crashed into a food stand in Pomona, California, on Friday.

The incident took place around 7.45 pm in the area of W. Holt Avenue and Dudley Street. A driver crashed her vehicle into a taco stand and fled the scene. 

One man was declared dead at the scene. Initial reports indicated that nine people were injured in the incident, that figure later increased to 12.

Two patients were treated at the scene while 10 others were hospitalised for treatment. Three of them are said to be in critical condition.

The taco stand, which was popular in the area, was completely destroyed.

“It looked like it was going pretty fast,” a witness Evan Navarro told CBS News. “The food cart was destroyed.”

“When I see everything happening, I was like, I got in shock. I seen the dead body — I hope there’s not more dead bodies because they got to go home to their families we all got families to go home to,” Efren Navarro, another witness, told NBC Los Angeles.

Meanwhile, the drive of the vehicle, a 26-year-old Pomona resident, turned herself in about an hour and 15 minutes later. 

“Initially, the driver ran away from the scene, and our officers began searching for her,” said Pomona Police Department spokesperson Aly Mejia, KTLA reported.

The area has been closed as authorities investigated the incident.

“Eastbound and westbound Holt Ave. between Erie St. and Dudley St. are closed to traffic while Officers conduct their investigation. Please stay away from the area as this is an active investigation,” Pomona Police Department tweeted. 

An investigation will determine if the driver was under the influence at the time of the crash. 

The identity of the driver and the deceased have not been revealed.
