Randi Weingarten married rabbi Sharon Kleinbaum on March 25, 2018.

Weingarten was born in 1957 to Jewish parents Gabriel and Edith (Appelbaum) Weingarten in New York City. Her mother was a teacher, and her father worked as an electrical engineer. Weingarten attended Clarkstown High School North in New City after growing up in Rockland County, New York. She believes herself to be a profoundly pious Jew and attends Congregation Beit Simchat Torah.

From 1983 until 1986, Weingarten practiced law for the firm of Stroock & Stroock & Lavan, where she represented the UFT in a number of contentious arbitration proceedings.
