A school bus in Magoffin County, Kentucky, crashed with students on board on Monday morning, several media outlets are reporting. LEX 18 says that four students on the bus are in critical condition.

Magoffin County Judge Executive Matthew Wireman told LEX 18 that the bus was on route 40, heading towards Salyersville when the crash happened. The Salyersville Fire Department confirmed that the bus went down an embankment and landed on its side injuring several students.

Judge Wireman said that two students were flown out from the spot to a hospital nearby while the rest were transported on the ground. The driver of the bus was also injured and was flown out with the students. He said that there were 22 people on the bus at the time of the accident, including the bus driver.

“Kentucky, we have some tough news. There has been a serious bus accident in Magoffin County involving children,” Kentucky governor Andy Beshear said in a tweet. “@KyStatePolice is on the scene and we are responding swiftly. Please join me in praying for all those involved. We will continue to share updates as available,” he further added. 

Students on that bus varied in age from elementary to high school, according to the Magoffin County Schools Board of Education. The district’s total number of schools is five.

According to Salyersville Fire, they have a sizable tow truck that transports semis nearby. They are hoping that will enable them to raise the bus from the embankment.
