The shooting took place shortly after 11 p.m. Thursday at the fast food joint, where four males were shot, according to Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department. The restaurant is located on the city’s south side.

One male was pronounced dead at the scene in the parking lot. Officers found the three other shooting victims injured but conscious inside the restaurant. It is believed that the shooting did not take place inside the restaurant itself. Instead, the victims ran in to seek shelter after the shooting ensued just outside. The three surviving victims have been hospitalized in stable condition, police said.

Police are currently investigating the motive and circumstances behind the shooting outside the restaurant, Major Mike Leepper said.

“We do not believe that the Steak ’n Shake business is associated in any way with the shooting other than the individuals were in the parking lot,” he told WXIN-TV. “The three individuals that sustained gunshot wounds that are still alive ran inside the business for help.”

Authorities said they recovered at least two firearms at the scene. They are still looking at surveillance footage from nearby security cameras to aid in their investigation.
