In his Georgia election fraud lawsuit, former US President Donald Trump entered a not guilty plea and waived his right to appear in court the next week.

Mr. Trump is one of 19 people accused of plotting to rig the 2020 elections in a US state.

Last Monday, he handed himself in to the Fulton County Jail in Atlanta, where his mugshot was taken.

Mr. Trump has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing and called the investigation a political witch hunt.

The 45th president was assigned the prisoner ID P01135809.

The former president pleaded not guilty in Georgia election interference case.

It was Donald Trump’s fourth arrest of 2023 and the start of a legal spectacle that will keep the nation divided and enthralled in equal measure in 2024.

The 77-year-old was fingerprinted and captured in a mugshot for a police routine while grimacing bitterly into the camera and furrowing his brows.

His measurements—6 feet 3 inches, or 1.9 metres, and 97.5 kilograms—became a matter of public record and received thousands of views.

It was the first time that a former US president had his mugshot taken; it was not part of his three earlier arrests.

Some 20 minutes later, Trump walked out of jail, having posted bail of US$200,000 (S$271,300) in advance.

People stopped and gazed as the convoy passed, according to local media. A lot of people pulled out their phones to capture the bizarre incident. Some people verbally cursed.

Conservatives expressed their support for Trump on social media by promising to stand with him. Others expressed their disgust.

“Those who decided to start using indictments, prosecutors, and even mugshots as weapons in a political campaign have unleashed a destructive new era in American politics,” Florida Republican Senator Marco Rubio tweeted.

“Now, for years to come, our criminal justice system will be used to target candidates in both parties, and the harm this will do to America will take a long time to fix.”

Trump has four cases against him and is the first former US president to be indicted.

The three earlier ones include his private business transactions, how he handled sensitive information, and his attempts to prevent the Senate certification of President Joe Biden’s election in 2020.

Trump continues to lead the Republican field in the campaign for the 2024 presidential nomination.

Early September might be designated as the day for Trump’s arraignment, in which he would be taken before the judge to hear the allegations and enter a plea.

To avoid having to go back to court, he can request to have this procedure waived.

The trial might start on October 23.

Over the previous few days, 18 of Trump’s co-defendants, including his former attorney Rudy Giuliani, have also been detained and freed on bail.

Following his visit to the jail, Trump issued a brief statement to the media in which he described what had happened as “a travesty of justice.”

The first Republican debate on Wednesday showed just how enormous of a shadow Trump has cast over the party.

Six of the eight other Republican contenders stated they would back Trump if he were to head the ticket, despite having a criminal record, when asked by the moderator.

The Republicans’ lowest point would be a conviction, though; in 1984, their famous president Ronald Reagan swept the country with his campaign slogan, “It is morning in America.”
