One Manson Family member, Leslie Van Houten, who was part of the cult that murdered a number of people in Los Angeles in the summer of 1969, may be set free in the coming weeks. However, two other Manson Family members who took part in the murders of Tate and Labianca, namely Charles “Tex” Watson and Patricia Krenwinkel, are still in jail. They both had parole applications rejected by Newsom as recently as 2021 and 2023.

Who is Charles “Tex” Watson?

Charles “Tex” Watson was formerly a member of the Manson Family. Tex Watson and three other members of the Manson Family broke into Sharon Tate’s Los Angeles house in 1969. They savagely killed Tate, who was eight months pregnant at the time, and the other four occupants of the home. Leno and Rosemary LaBianca were also murdered at their house the next night by Watson and other Family members.

Following his capture, Tex Watson was charged with seven counts of first-degree murder and one count of murder conspiracy. He was found guilty on all counts in 1971 and given the death penalty. However, once the California Supreme Court ruled that the state’s death penalty law was unconstitutional, his sentence was later reduced to life in prison.

Who is Patricia Krenwinkel?

Patricia Krenwinkel, sometimes called “Katie” or “Big Patty,” was once a member of the Manson Family. Krenwinkel, like Charles “Tex” Watson, had a key role in the 1969 Tate-LaBianca killings. Similarly, she also took part in the murder of Leno and Rosemary LaBianca the following night at their house.

On August 16, 1969, Krenwinkel and other members of the Manson Family were taken into custody. She was convicted in 1971 on seven counts of first-degree murder and one count of murder conspiracy. She received a death sentence, similar to Charles Watson, which was eventually reduced to life in prison.
