An arrest has been made by the authorities in connection with the shooting death and crash of an Amazon big rig driver earlier this month on I-5 in Lathrop.

Search warrants were sent to the suspect in Manteca on Saturday. According to the CHP, there, police detained Andrew Christopher Watson, 29, of Manteca on homicide suspicion. After that, Watson was lodged in the San Joaquin County Prison.

Shodiev Ilkhom, a 37-year-old Amazon big rig driver from North Carolina, was shot on June 15 at roughly 12:46 p.m. while traveling north on Interstate 5 close to Lathrop. The gunfire caused the large truck to leave the freeway, crash into parked cars at a nearby company, and then into a structure.

With a gunshot wound, Ilkhom was taken to a nearby hospital where he eventually passed away.

Following the incident, CHP officers from the Stockton office arrived on the scene and requested assistance from the Valely Division investigative services team. The vehicle and Watson were identified throughout the course of the following week by investigators using information acquired from security film, witness interviews, and extra assistance from the public.

Watson was taken into custody by CHP SWAT personnel in Manteca on Saturday morning after a search warrant was executed.

Watson’s capture is credited to the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office, Tracy, Manteca, and Stockton police departments, as well as the San Joaquin County District Attorney’s Office.

Ilkhom and his wife reportedly immigrated to the United States from Tajikistan four years ago, according to Ilkhom’s family.
