A federal grand jury has charged Democratic Senator Bob Menendez and his wife Nadine Arslanian on corruption charges stemming from an inquiry into a fancy car, $400,000 in gold bars, and an apartment that Menendez and his wife allegedly received.
The jury returned the indictment after hearing allegations that he had an inappropriate relationship with three businessmen from New Jersey. One of the allegations was that developer Fred Daibes may have given his wife Nadine up to $400,000 in gold bars. The gold was sold by 56-year-old Arslanian between April 7 and June 16, 2022.
According to the indictment, Menendez and his wife accepted hundreds of thousands of dollars in bribes in exchange for leveraging their influence as senators to secure the businessman’s safety and financial gain.
The indictment stated, “Those bribes included cash, gold, payments toward a home mortgage, compensation for a low-or-no-show job, a luxury vehicle, and other things of value”
According to the indictment, when federal officials searched Menendez’s New Jersey home in June 2022, they discovered proof of the two of them allegedly engaging in a corrupt bribery scheme with the three businessmen.
Menendez is accused of improperly pressing a U.S. agricultural official to gain an exclusive deal for Hana as the sole supplier of halal meat to Egypt and of disclosing sensitive U.S. government information that helped the government of Egypt covertly.
