On Monday, a Marine Corps veteran, was seen in CCTV footage putting a homeless man named Jordan Neely in a fatal chokehold. On Friday, a Marine Corps spokesperson identified the man as Daniel J Penny.

Who is Daniel J Penny?

Daniel J Penny is a 24-year-old Marine Corps veteran. He served in the 1st Battalion, 2nd Marines, 2nd Marine Division as a sergeant in North Carolina between 2017 and 2021. He has been the recipient of seven medals, the spokesperson said.

The spokesperson, however, did not comment on the incident which has been classified as a homicide by the New York Police Department.

According to The Daily Mail report, Penny was riding the F train when the 30-year-old homeless man – a Michael Jackson impersonator – allegedly began throwing garbage and yelling.

When the train was approaching the Broadway Lafayette station, Penny put the man in a chokehold in order to subdue him. Two other male passengers also joined in to help restrain Neely.

Neely was taken to a hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival. On Wednesday, the New York City Medical Examiner’s office announced that the 30-year-old died as a result of a homicide caused by manner pressure on the neck. The ruling sparked protests in New York and calls for Penny to be arrested were raised.

Penny was initially questioned by the NYPD on Monday, but was released on the same day. Some of the people who were on board the train said that Penny held Neely in the chokehold for over 15 minutes.
