A suspect named Jermarcus Jernigan has been detained by Atlanta Police in connection with the murder of black trans woman Koko Da Doll, which occurred more than a week ago.

Who is Jermarcus Jernigan?

Jermarcus Jernigan, who was born in 2005, is detained in connection with the murder of Rasheed Williams, a black transgender woman known by the stage name Koko Da Doll.

On April 18, he is charged with shooting Koko Da Doll at a residence close to a mall in southwest Atlanta.

Police have not yet released details on the arrest, however they did claim that the youngster was taken into custody without a hitch after detectives obtained arrest warrants for the suspect in connection with a murder, an aggravated assault, and gun possession.

According to NBC News, Jermarcus Jernigan, a 17-year-old male, turned himself in on April 26 after officials received a warrant for his arrest in relation to the death of Koko Da Doll, also known as Rasheeda Williams.

On April 18 at about 10:40 p.m., Williams, 35, lost his life in the shooting. Williams gained notoriety after taking part in the documentary “Kokomo City” at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2023.

The victim was found unresponsive when police arrived at the scene of the shooting, according to the authorities, who did not provide the victim’s identity at the time. The man, who was “not alert, conscious, or breathing,” according to officials, was declared dead at the spot.

At the time, authorities announced on Twitter that they were looking into three violent crimes involving transgender women who had been killed this year. Officials acknowledged that there is rising violence against transgender individuals in Georgia, though they did not specify whether they believed this was a targeted attack against the trans community.

“While these individual incidents are unrelated, we are very aware of the epidemic-level violence black and brown transgender women face in America.” they stated.

Koko Da Doll was waiting for the countrywide premiere of the transgender women’s film “Kokomo City,” which, according to the film’s website, focused on the “stories of four black transgender s*x workers in New York City and Georgia,” when she was killed.

D. Smith, the documentary’s director, posted on Instagram shortly after she was killed: “On Tuesday night, Rasheeda Williams was shot and killed in Atlanta. Rasheeda, aka Koko Da Doll, was the latest victim of violence against Black transgender women.”

The 17-year-old will be charged as an adult under Georgia law, according to the officials, who have not yet provided any other information on the event.
