Several former judges and high-ranking attorneys who were nominated by Republican administrations reiterated their support for the suggested trial date of January 2, 2024, on Monday. 

The association also includes a retired federal appellate judge, Justice John Michael Luttig, who counseled then-Vice President Mike Pence.

Who is Justice John Michael Luttig?

John Michael Luttig was born on June 13, 1954. He is an American corporate lawyer and legal expert well-known for his work as a jurist. Luttig made a notable contribution to the field of law while serving as a judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit from 1991 to 2006. 

In order to accept the position of general counsel at Boeing, he left the court of appeals in 2006, which changed the course of his career. Luttig carried on this duty until 2019, furthering his illustrious career in the legal and business spheres.

Luttig spent a year working in the Reagan administration after he finished law school. He took on the function of an associate at this time under the direction of White House Counsel Fred F. Fielding. Warren Burger, who was the Chief Justice at the time, recommended Luttig for this job.

On April 23, 1991, John Michael Luttig was nominated by President George H. W. Bush to fill a vacant seat on the Fourth Circuit of the United States Court of Appeals. At the time of his appointment, Luttig was the federal appeals court’s youngest judge at 37 years old.

John Luttig gave testimony during a live, on-camera session of the US House Select Committee on the January 6 Attack on June 16, 2022. In a written statement submitted for the record before the hearing, Luttig voiced his belief that former President Trump and his followers had “instigated” an attack on democracy in order to maintain their hold on power.
