The victim of the gunshot homicide that took place on Wednesday in the vicinity of Isotopes Park has been identified by the Albuquerque Police Department. 

Froylan Villegas, an 11-year-old victim, tragically died on September 6 as a result of the road rage incident.

Who was Froylan Villegas?

Froylan Villegas was 11 years old. He died tragically in a road rage shooting near Isotopes Park in Albuquerque on September 6.

The woman who was operating the vehicle when she was shot and also sustained injuries. Although they have withheld her name, the authorities have stated that she sustained serious wounds and is still in unstable condition as of Friday, September 8. She is Froylan’s aunt, and police say she is in her twenties.

Police Chief Harold Medina during a press conference on Thursday morning, explained that a family was leaving the stadium after a baseball game when they got into an argument with people in another vehicle about a traffic violation, possibly an improper U-turn, shortly after crossing the intersection of Avenida César Chávez and University Boulevard. According to the chief, the situation escalated, resulting in someone from the second vehicle firing a total of 17 rounds.

Medina in a statement said, “What’s most disheartening is an 11-year-old child was in the front seat of the vehicle and lost their lives last night. We had a relative of this child also struck. We do have one of our best homicide detectives on this incident. … I am hopeful they will be able to bring justice to this family.”

Following the horrible road rage shooting that killed an 11-year-old child, New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham declared gun violence a public emergency in the state.

The governor is encouraging public health and safety officials to collaborate to provide a proactive and well-coordinated response. She also handled the distribution of $750,000 in emergency funds to assist with these activities.
