A team of cold-case investigators called Case Breakers said that an FBI official has confirmed the identity of the Zodiac Killer, Fox News reported on Wednesday. They said that Gary Francis Poste is considered a suspect.

The Zodiac Killer was a serial murderer who was active in San Francisco Bay area, California in the 1960s. The suspect killed at least five people and sent letters and cryptic messages to media outlets. Several documentaries and books have been written about the killer.

An investigative journalist, Thomas Colbert, in the Case Breakers volunteer team, said in a press release this week that a whistleblower was told by an FBI agent that an Air Force veteran named Gary Francis Poste was the Zodiac Killer.

The journalist added that a lab has a ‘partial’ DNA sample. The volunteer further accuses government agencies of not properly investigating the killings.

“The felon has been secretly listed as the Zodiac ‘suspect’ in Headquarters’ computers since 2016,” the group wrote in a press release.

“With his ‘partial DNA’ safely secured at the feds’ Quantico, Virginia lab.” The FBI told Fox News Digital in 2021 that the case was open.

The Zodiac Killer had told media outlets that he killed as many as 37 people. Some of his confirmed victims were named as David Arthur Faraday and Betty Lou Jensen, Cecelia Ann Shepard, Paul Lee Stine and Darlene Elizabeth Ferrin.

The suspect apparently targeted couples. Two of his male victims survived. In 1969, he reported himself and claim responsibility for a double homicide.

As per Case Breakers’ press release, Gary Francis Poste was an Air Force veteran. He had regular medical check-ups for a firearm crisis.

Gary Francis Poste’s neighbor told Fox News: “He lived a double life. As I’m an adult thinking back, it all kind of makes sense now. At the time when I was a teenager, I didn’t put two and two together until I got older. It hit me full-blown that Gary’s the Zodiac.”
