September 21 is observed as World Alzheimer’s Day to create awareness around this neurological disorder that affects millions of people worldwide. In India, over 5 million people suffer from some or other form of dementia which is a result of Alzheimer’s disease. The number of people suffering from Alzheimer’s disease is expected to rise to 7.6 million soon, according to a report by the Alzheimer’s and Related Disorders Society of India (ARDSI).
What is Alzheimer’s disease?
Discovered in 1901 by a German psychiatrist Alois Alzheimer, Alzheimer’s disease is a degenerative brain condition that gradually impacts memory and cognitive abilities. Alzheimer’s disease is the most frequent cause of dementia among the elderly. A progressive illness, it causes brain cells to deteriorate and die.
What are the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease?
The most significant symptom of Alzheimer’s disease is memory loss. An inability to recall recent events or discussions is usually an early symptom of the illness. Memory problems increase as the disease progresses.

World Alzheimer’s Day is observed to recognise the importance of having discussions on dementia. The theme of World Alzheimer’s Day 2021 is “Know Dementia, Know Alzheimer’s”. The day sparks discussions on the neurological disorder and the need for support for people suffering from the condition.
What are some common risk factors for Alzheimer’s disease?
Age: Age is one of the most crucial factors for Alzheimer’s disease. People above the age of 65 are more prone to develop Alzheimer’s.
Genetics: Scientists have identified different varieties of genes that increase possibility of developing the disorder.
Family history: Chances of developing Alzheimer’s increase among people whose parents or siblings have suffered from the neurological condition
Heart health: Cardiovascular diseases may also lead to Alzheimer’s. Factors that lead to cardiovascular disease such as obesity, diabetes, smoking, high cholesterol and high blood pressure have been linked to Alzheimer’s disease.

Can Alzheimer’s disease be treated?
There is no cure for Alzheimer’s disease at the moment. No specific treatment exists that can reverse or stop the disease. However, doctors often prescribe drugs that can significantly improve cognition.
