Answer: French Revolution
The Eiffel Tower was constructed in France a hundred years after the end of the French Revolution. The 1789 uprising in France put across certain political ideas and theories that are considered to be the founding ideas of liberal democracy.
The tower is named after Gustave Eiffel, who was the owner of the company behind the design and construction of the tower. Its design was made by Maurice Koechlin and Emile Nouguier. Kalki Koechlin, the French actress who extensively works in Indian films, is a descendant of Maurice from her father’s side.
The Eiffel Tower was constructed as the 1889 World Fair’s centrepiece. Although the design of the tower met with criticism when it was first unveiled, it has since become a cultural icon and a symbol of Paris and France all over the world.
After its construction, the Eiffel Tower surpassed Washington Monument as the world’s tallest man-made structure. It had to secede the place to the Chrysler Building in New York in 1930. At the 1889 World Fair, some notable personalities who visited the tower include inventor Thomas Edison, “Buffalo Bill” Cody, and then Prince of Wales, Edward II. Edison had written a message on the tower’s guestbook appreciating Gustave Eiffel for the “gigantic and original specimen of modern engineering”.
