Delhi, officially known as the National Capital Territory (NCT) of Delhi,

is a city and a union territory of India containing New Delhi, the capital of India.

It is located in Northern India and has an estimated population of over 28 million. Delhi shares borders with the state of Uttar Pradesh in the east and Haryana in the west, north, and south. Delhi is the largest metropolitan area in India and the second-largest in the world, just after Tokyo.

Delhi was the capital of two major empires in South Asia from the 13th century till the mid-19th century – the Delhi Sultanate and the Mughal Empire.

Until December 1911, the city of Calcutta was the capital of India during British Rule. When it gradually became the center of nationalist movements, Viceroy Lord Curzon led the Partition of Bengal, creating a tremendous political and religious upsurge including political assassinations of British officials in Calcutta.

During the Delhi Durbar in December 1911, George V, Emperor of India, while laying the foundation stone for the viceroy’s residence,

declared that the capital of the Raj would be shifted from Calcutta to Delhi.

The name New Delhi was given in 1927, and the new capital was inaugurated in February 1931. New Delhi was officially declared the capital of the Union of India after the country gained independence on 15 August 1947.
