Skateboarding, a sport that consists of riding, balancing and performing stunts on a skateboard, made its debut at the 2020 Summer Olympics which was held in Tokyo, Japan. The sport was also approved by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to be included in the 2024 Olympic Games that will be held in Paris, France.
Olympic skateboarding is sanctioned by World Skate. Back in 2015, the sport was shortlisted along with surfing, karate, baseball, softball and sport climbing for the consideration of inclusion in the 2020 Summer Olympics.
In June 2016, the IOC announced that all of the shortlisted sports will be included in the 2020 event.
One of the key challenges for the inclusion of skateboarding in the Olympics was the risk of injuries, which in many instances have been fatal. Another obstacle was that the sub-culture of the sport suggested that the Olympic Games were too “mainstream” for it, and so organizations of skateboarding did not push a lot for the sport’s inclusion in the Olympic Games.
