November is the eleventh month of the year in the Julian and Gregorian calendars. It is the last of the four months to have 30 days and the only of the last five months to have less than 31 days.
In the calendar of Romulus, November was the ninth month of the year.
November gained its name from the Latin term ‘novem’ meaning ‘nine’ when January and February were added to the Roman calendar.
While November is a month of late autumn in the Northern Hemisphere, it celebrates late spring in the Southern Hemisphere.
The western zodiac signs for November are Scorpio and Sagittarius. November’s birthstone is topaz, particularly yellow in color which symbolizes friendship. Its birth flower is the Chrysanthemums, which are flowering plants native to East Asia and Northwestern Europe.
In Catholic tradition, November is considered the Month of the Holy Souls in Purgatory.
November meteor showers include the Andromedids, which generally occur from late September to early December and peaks around mid-November, and the Leonids and the Alpha Monocerotids, which occur in mid-November. Other meteor showers include the Northern Taurids, which occur from October to December, the Southern Taurids, which occurs from September to late November, and the Phoenicids; which occur from late November to early December. The Orionids, which occur in late October, sometimes also last into November.
