The film is based on Kalki Krishnamurthy’s 1955 novel Ponniyin Selvan. It is a period-action film and has been co-written by Elango Kumaravel and B. Jeyamohan, along with Mani Ratnam.
Rajaraja I of the Chola dynasty ruled from 947 CE to 1014 CE. He is remembered as one of the most dominant rulers in south India with an influence that spanned across the region. He successfully reinstated the Chola supremacy in south India during his tenure.
Because of his towering stature in history, Rajaraja I has repeatedly appeared in south Indian popular culture. A slew of Tamil novels and films deal with the life and conquest of Rajaraja I, the most memorable of them would be the Sivaji Ganesan starter 1973 Tamil film Rajaraja Cholan.
Kalki Krishnamurthy’s novel, on which the film is based, revolves around the assassination of Aditya Chola II, the elder brother of Rajaraja Chola I. When Aditya Chola II was assassinated, it created a crisis in the Chola dynasty, which Rajaraja Chola I had to navigate to be eventually crowned king in 947 CE.
While the exact historical plot of the film will only be known when it releases, it is expected to be around this context.
