Answer: 360
The eye of a horse, or the equine eye, is one of the largest eyes in any land-based mammal, and being positioned laterally on either side of a horse’s head, provides the animal with nearly 360 degree vision.
However, in actuality, a horse’s field of view is not 360 degrees, but actually 350 degrees, with 285 degrees being monocular vision, and 65 degrees being binocular vision.
This means that the only blind spot a horse has (while looking straight ahead) is directly behind the horse.
This massive field of view ensures that a horse can spot predators approaching from any direction, except from behind.
In terms of other features of equine vision, horses are not colour blind, but in fact have dichromatic or two-colour vision, meaning they can distinguish between two wavelengths of light. Humans, for comparison, have trichromatic vision, and can distinguish between three wavelengths of light. Horses, however, have much superior night vision in comparison to humans.
According to researchers, a horse’s dichromatic vision appears somewhat like red-green color blindness in humans, where red and colours associated with red appear more green-ish.
While a horse’s eyes are usually brown, they can also come in various other colours, including blue, hazel, amber, and green. Horses, like humans, can also have dichromatic, or two differently coloured eyes.
