After the French Revolution, interest in the cathedral dwindled, and the structure was falling apart until it became the centerstage for Alexander Dumas’ The Hunchback of Notre-Dame. The renewed public interest led to a major restoration project between 1844 and 1864, which was supervised by Eugène Viollet-le-Duc.

On 15th April,2019, while undergoing renovation, the roof of Notre-Dame caught fire. The Cathedral burned for 15 hours, suffering heavy damage, including the destruction of the fleche and most of the roof. Despite several proposals for a modernized renovation, the French National Assembly stated that that the restoration must preserve the cathedral’s ‘historic, artistic and architectural interest’. The structure was stabilized against possible collapse in November 2020, and reconstruction began in 2021.
