The Petronas Towers stand in a tube-in-tube configuration – a concept created by architect Fazlur Rahman Khan. It is a usual practice to apply the tube structure to extremely tall buildings.
The 88-floor towers are primarily made of reinforced concrete and have a steel and glass facade with elements seen in Islamic art. The cross-section of the towers, though with circular sectors added to accommodate office space needs, is based on a Rub el Hizb, adding another Islamic element to the design. The circular segments resemble the Qutub Minar’s lower section.
