Swedish politician Ulf Hjalmar Ed Kristersson, born on December 29, 1963, has been the country’s prime minister since October 20, 2022. He has served as the Moderate Party’s (M) leader since October 2017 and as the county representative for Södermanland since 2014.
He previously served as the county representative for Stockholm County from 1991 to 2000. Prior to that, he held the positions of Chairman of the Moderate Youth League from 1988 to 1992 and Minister for Social Security from 2010 to 2014.
He was designated spokesperson for economic policy and the Moderate Party’s shadow finance minister on December 11th, 2014. After Anna Kinberg Batra resigned as the head of the Moderate Party, Kristersson declared his candidacy on September 1.
Under his direction, the Moderate Party has become more receptive to the Sweden Democrats (SD) since the 2018 Swedish general election and by the end of 2021 had forged an unofficial right-wing partnership with them and two center-right parties of the disbanded Alliance. After winning the majority in the Riksdag in the Swedish general election of 2022, Kristersson was chosen as prime minister on October 17 with the support of SD.
Kristersson lives in Strängnäs with his wife Birgitta Ed, with whom he has adopted three children from China.
Lars Kristersson (1938-2015) and Karin Kristersson were the parents of Ulf Kristersson, who was born in Lund, Skne County. Five years later, the family relocated to Torshälla, a town outside of Eskilstuna. Kristersson was a gymnast with a company in his youth.
Kristersson completed his secondary education in Eskilstuna’s St. Eskils gymnasium. Following graduation, Kristersson went on to earn a degree in economics at Uppsala University while serving in the military as a platoon commander with the Uppland Regiment from 1983 to 1984.
