What gas is used as a fuel in these space vehicles?
Sulpher Dioxide
Carbon Monoxide
Methane
Liquid Hydrogen
Answer: Liquid Hydrogen
Hydrogen, a light and extremely powerful rocket propellant has the smallest molecular weight of any known substance and burns extremely hot (5,500°F). Liquid hydrogen produces the highest specific impulse or efficiency in relation to the amount of propellant consumed, of any known rocket propellant when combined with an oxidizer such as liquid oxygen.
Liquid hydrogen is a common liquid rocket fuel for rocketry applications; both NASA and the US Air Force have a large number of liquid hydrogen tanks, each with a capacity of up to 3.8 million liters (1 million U.S. gallons).
Liquid hydrogen has a density of only 70.85 g/L (at 20 K), a relative density of only 0.07. Despite having more than twice the specific energy of other fuels, it has a remarkably low volumetric energy density, many orders of magnitude lower.
It requires cryogenic storage technology, such as special thermally insulated containers and requires special handling for all cryogenic fuels.
