Answer- Arth Ganga
The Arth Ganga is a project launched by the government of India where “sustainable development” of the river will be carried out with a special focus on economic activities related to the Ganga. The project was first announced by India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi when he spoke about it at the inaugural National Ganga Council meeting in 2019. According to the government, people living near the bank of the Ganga in the states of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, and West Bengal will benefit from the project.
The central government has identified six different verticals under which the development work will be carried out- natural farming; reusal as well as monetization of waste water; generation of income opportunities; increasing the participation of local people; promotion of the Ganga’s cultural significance; empowerment of local authorities for better water management.
While speaking on the Arth Ganga project, Mansukh Mandaviya, Minister of State for Shipping (Independent Charge), Chemical, and Fertilizers highlighted the importance of inland waterways. Mandaviya said that building well-connected inland waterways will be a “pillar” of this project.
This is the second such measure being taken by the Modi government after 2014’s Namami Gange. The 2014 scheme was brought about in order to reduce water pollution in the Ganga and launch conservation efforts pertaining to the river.
