Kiyamizu-Dera
Answer: Senso-ji
Senso-ji, Tokyo‘s oldest temple, is located in the Asakusa district and stands next to a five-story pagoda, known as the Asakusa Pagoda.
The Senso-ji temple is dedicated to the bodhisattva Kannon: according to legend, two fishermen discovered a statue of Kannon and in 628 AD and took it to their village chief, who recognised the sanctity of the statue and enshrined it by remodeling his own house into a small temple.
The temple that we know today is estimated to have been completed around 645 AD, making it the oldest temple in the Japanese capital of Tokyo.
However, during World War II, the Senso-ji temple was bombed and destroyed completely during a US air raid on Tokyo on March 10, 1945.
Subsequently, the temple was rebuilt and is considered to be a symbol of Japan‘s rebirth after World War II, as well as peace. Notably, a tree within the temple grounds that was also decimated during the March 10, 1945 air raid on Tokyo has also grown back within the husk of the old tree, and is held to be symbolic of the temple itself.
While the temple was formerly associated with the Tendai sect of Buddhism, it became independent after the end of World War II.
