Answer: 31 October

Halloween can be traced back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain which would be observed on October 31 every year. It is believed that during Halloween, the lines between the living and the dead get blurred, giving birth to the custom where children dress up as ghosts and go door-to-door playing trick or treat.

Across different regions, Halloween has different connotations and meanings. Among non-Christians in many parts of the world, the date coincided with the end of the harvest season and the rituals and activities in it are situated in that context.

The Samhain festival in the Celtics, to which Halloween owes its roots, took place mainly in agricultural societies. People observed Halloween by lighting bonfires and dressing up in eerie clothes to ward off ghosts.

The trick-or-treat tradition is the Christian adaptation of the Samhain. Pope Gregory III declared in the eighteenth century that November 1 would be called All Saints Day in which Christians will remember all the important saints in the religion.

Since there were many similarities between the ideas of the two, many rituals for All Saints Day were similar to the Samhain.

Halloween, in turn, became the night before All Saints Day – i.e. 31st October evening.
