American economist Ben S. Bernanke presided over the Federal Reserve as its fourteenth chairman from 2006 to 2014. He was named a distinguished fellow at the Brookings Institution after leaving the Fed.

Bernanke was awarded the 2009 Time Person of the Year for overseeing the Federal Reserve’s response to the financial crisis of the late 2000s while serving as chairman. [4] Prior to leading the Federal Reserve, Bernanke was a tenured professor at Princeton University, where he oversaw the economics department from 1996 until September 2002, when he took a leave of absence from his official duties.
Together with Douglas Diamond and Philip H. Dybvig, Bernanke received the 2022 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences “for research on banks and financial crises,” and more specifically “for his analysis of the Great Depression.”
Before George W. Bush nominated him to succeed Alan Greenspan as chairman of the US Federal Reserve. He also served as the head of the Council of Economic Advisers.
