Amazon Quiz: Which squirrel breed is considered the main cause of the fall in the population of this breed?

Japanese Squirrel

Mexican Fox Squirrel

Fiery Squirrel

Eastern Grey Squirrel

Answer: Eastern Grey Squirrel

The Eastern
Gray Squirrel is a tree squirrel of the Sciurus genus. Native to North America,
the Eastern Gray Squirrel or simply the grey squirrel, is considered a natural
regenerator in the continent. However, the same specie introduced elsewhere
turns into an invasive specie that leads to the decline of squirrel
populations.

The grey
squirrel features in Europe’s list of Invasive Alien Species of Union Concern.
Consequently, there are rules that bar the import, breeding, transport,
commercialisation or intentional release of this specie in the whole of the
European Union.

Brownish in
colour, the Eastern Gray Squirrel has grey fur with a brownish-orange underside.
The squirrel type is common in urban environments where the risk of predation
is less. Melanistic squirrels display a greater degree of adaptability to cold
weather and can survive even in negative 10 degrees Celsius temperature.

The Eastern
Gray Squirrel is typically 23-30 centimetres in length with a 19–25-centimetre
tail. An adult grey squirrel weighs anywhere between 400-600 grams. This specie
of squirrel does not display sexual dimorphism, which is to say that there is
no gender difference in size or coloration.
