Perhaps one of the most famous footballers in the world, Lionel Andrés Messi is an Argentine professional footballer. Widely regarded as the best in football, something which fans of Cristiano Ronaldo would no doubt contest, Messi has won a record seven Ballon D’Or awards. He has also won six European Golden Shoes.

The 35-year-old who now plays for Ligue 1 club Paris Saint-Germain and is the captain of the Argentina national team spent most of his professional career playing for Barcelona. He joined the Spanish club at the age of 13, making his competitive debut at the age of 17 in 2004. 

At age 22, he won his first Ballon D’Or. Messi helped the Spanish club achieve success over the multiple seasons that he played for them. Over the next three seasons since his first Ballon D’Or, he won the award three consecutive times, making him the first player to win the award four times in a row. 

He continued to play for Barcelona for a number of years, assuming the team’s captaincy in 2018. In 2021, after running out his contract, he signed with Paris Saint-Germain. 

At the national level, he has been Argentina’s all-time leading goal scorer. He was the youngest Argentine to play in the FIFA World Cup in 2006. Even though he announced his retirement from international football in 2016, he reversed the decision, opting to come back to help Argentina qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. 

In 2011 and 2012, Messi was among Times’ 100 most influential people in the world.
